“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)
American History was one of my favorite courses as a college student. My professor was a master storyteller who brought characters to life in such a way that once you heard his vivid descriptions, you would never forget the information.
That is why I still remember that the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was the trigger for several southern states to secede and form the Confederate States of America. I still remember that the Civil War that started in 1861 would result in 620,000 people being killed – the deadliest of all wars fought on American soil. But what I will never forget is how families divided, and brothers killed brothers because of their closely held political beliefs. Learning this was not just heartbreaking – it was incomprehensible to me. Yet here we are 160 years later doing the same thing.
We are engaged in a civil war of ideologies. The wounds we are inflicting on others are not visible but make no mistake – they are devastating blows to those on the receiving end of our assaults. Even more tragic is the fact that the attacks are on the wrong enemy!
It is time to call a ceasefire with our fellow citizens and start fighting the real threat. We are in a spiritual battle and right now it looks like Satan is winning. Seeing Christians as embroiled in the conflict as non-Christians is sickening, and it must stop because we know better. Instead:
Pray for those who have put their faith in political leaders instead of Jesus Christ.
Pray for those who do not yet know Jesus to come to Him.
Pray for those who need courage to boldly proclaim that Jesus is the only answer to our dilemma.
Pray for those who are in positions to facilitate healing of our nation.
Pray for those who are wounded, that they will be restored to emotional and spiritual health.
and most importantly
Pray that God will thwart all efforts of the enemy that divide us and separate us from God.
I decided long ago that I had nothing new to add to the social media debates. But what I did have was a perspective that the world desperately needs. You have it too. It is the Gospel. If people know more about your political positions than your love for Jesus, then it is time to examine your witness in this world. Never in my lifetime have people needed to hear that there is reason to be hopeful even when things appear so hopeless.
Give them hope. Give them Jesus.
