Patient Toward You: II Peter 3:8-9

“Don’t let it escape your notice, dear friends, that with the Lord a single day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a single day. The Lord isn’t slow to keep his promise, as some think of slowness, but he is patient toward you, not wanting anyone to perish but all to change their hearts and lives.”

II Peter 3:8-9 (CEB)

Governor Extends Washington State Stay-at-Home Order Through May 31

I suspected this was coming.  I hoped that I was wrong.  Living in the state with the first identified Coronavirus case means Washingtonians have lived with this threat longer than anyone else in the United States.  The toll it is taking on people economically, physically, and emotionally is incalculable.  Everyone wants this to end, and yet here we are – still home, for what seems like a thousand years.

Why?  God is sovereign.  He could wipe out this virus right now, and it is my prayer that He will.  So why hasn’t He?  Maybe there is a hint in this passage:

The Lord isn’t slow to keep his promise, as some think of slowness, but he is patient toward you, not wanting anyone to perish but all to change their hearts and lives.”

II Peter 3:9 (CEB)

Once you cut through all the statistics and rationale, the message from the Governor is that this extension is for our own good.  Now, we shouldn’t be putting our trust in government officials, but we should be trusting God.

I don’t know why He is allowing these conditions to persist.

Maybe He is giving us all more time to draw closer to Him.

Maybe returning to what is “normal” isn’t good for us.

Maybe He’s just a good Father waiting patiently for His children to do the right thing because He cannot bear the thought of seeing them perish.

Everything has a shelf-life, and this virus will not live forever.  But while we are waiting for the threat to ease, let’s use this season to focus on that which will never die – God’s promise of life everlasting.

Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We still serve a risen Savior, and no virus will ever change that. Here is the real headline:

God Extends Offer of Eternal Life and Patiently Waits for You to Change Your Heart and Life

If you already know Jesus, open your heart and mind to a new calling on your life during this time of distancing from the world.

If you do not know Jesus, open your heart and mind to Him. Of all the things I want for you, it is to know Jesus, and let Him change your life. If you want to talk to someone, I am available. Reach out! I would love to tell you about the Jesus I love.

Be blessed,
